I love to knit. I also love the challenge of knitting things I have never knit before. So this fall I decided to knit a pair of wool longies for my nephew. I found a pattern that was so inspiring I couldn't help but knit them immediately! Of course, because this is how it is with me, I fell in love with the yarn colors used in the pattern, which are evidently not in exsistence anymore. I searched for weeks for this yarn but was unable to find it. As is typical of my incredibly determined personality I was also completely unable to give up the quest to make the exact longies I saw in the pattern. So, the searching continued until I came across a yarn company who raises their own sheep, sheers them, dyes the fibers and makes the yarn, in the colors I was looking for! This was the perfect storm for me! I waited impatiently for the yarn to arrive so I could get started.
I have to say knitting the longies in this pattern was a bit challenging because of the way the pants sit on the needles, but overall it was not complicated. I was so excited when I was finished! They turned out exactly as I wanted them to be. My sister won't be using them for diaper soakers (my nephew wears mostly Gro-Via and Simplex diapers so he doesn't need the waterproof benefits of wool). However, they look amazing, and he loves them. :)
Wool covers can be so fantastic for cloth diapering and I love the option of using longies as a diaper soaker/fashionable piece of clothing. Any of you who have had a little leaking while out and about can appreciate the waterproofing wool offers. Those of you using prefolds, flats, fitteds or contours should really think about the ease of using wool, no other cover required, minimal washing and even though they are expensive, they can save you money since they do the work of many covers all in one.
We do sell a few wool longies, and covers at Franklin Goose, and we are always looking for other companies to add to our product offering, so if you know of any you can recommend we would love the suggestions. If you have questions about wool, we would love to chat about it so leave us a comment and we will be sure to get back to you!
